NSJS 2012 Regatta results

NSJS is pleased to have several sailors place in DRYA regattas this year as follows.

NSJS President Nickie Kowal wins NSSC 2010 highest award

North Star Sail Club the parent sponsor of NSJS honored our programs President Nickie Kowal as their "Member of the Year" for 2010. In a ceremony held during the Commodores Ball 2011 Commodore Chuck Drummond presented a speechless Kowal the trophy in recognition of a banner year on the water and in the classroom.

JACK SUTTON AWARD 

NSJS has on the DRYA Jack Sutton Award for outstanding achievement and improvement to be presented at the DRYA Awards Banquet Nov 12th at GPYC. Congratulations you hard work has made this recognition possible.

HAYRIDE PARTY A BLAST, WHAT NEXT BOWLING?

Octobers Hayride-Bonfire party was well attended with costumes worn by most into the wee hours of the night. A great way to stay together after the season. THANKS Nickie and family.  Next up a winter bowling day & Iceboat party, stay tuned.

Donations for Auctions

If you have any sailing or boating gear, concert tickets, sporting event tickets, artwork, household goods, services, etc. that you would be willing to donate to North Star Junior Sailing, Inc. for our auction, please do so.  Also, if you would be willing to collect donations from local businesses, please let us know.  We'll be scheduling fundraising meetings shortly.

NSJS mourns the loss of founder Pat Martin. His program that included his own children has grow to what we have today. RIP  

Dawn Riley @ NSSC

A special “homecoming” seminar especially for the kids of Junior Sailing on 3-9-11 featured Michigan native Dawn Riley, an America's Cup and Around the World Sailboat sailor. Dawn is also an accomplished businesswoman, community leader and youth sports advocate, author, speaker, TV commentator, and committed philanthropist.

North Star Junior Sailing was part of the early years of Dawn’s sailing career. She discussed her own passion for sailing including working on boats at Burr Yachts, racing around the world, the Americas Cup and her newest activities with the Oakcliff Sailing Center which is dedicated to training sailors, boat workers, owners and teams in order to raise the level of sailors and sailing in the United States.

NSSC "Saving Sailing" follow up

On October 25th @ NSSC and NSJS hosted a round table discussion on the future of junior and family sailing. This follow up  to the DRYA symposium held at DYC with author Nicholas Hayes was moderated by Com. Jim Rodgers & Rich King. Many attended and brainstormed ideas to implement to bring people into our spot  More meetings are planned come share your thoughts and ideas for the future of sailing. 

ADULT SAILING A GO

2011 marks the return of adult sailing classes at NSSC. Renamed "Learn to Sail" or L2S for short. This program taught by NSJS instructors was started in 2006 and is in full swing.

NSJS Sailors win teams first ever Jr. Olympic medal

420 Collegiate class salors Paul H. and crew Cruz "Team Blond" took a Bronze medal at he MBYC Regatta. Their medal was the first ever for a NSJS team. WELL DONE

High School Sailing Clubs encouraged

NSJS directors have been contacting Macomb County High Schools to lend a hand in forming school teams Come on out and test the waters its a blast. News Flash Warren De LaSalle and Regina have formed a team!

North Star Junior Sailing 420 Fleet sail campaign

Junior Sailing has officially kicked off our Fundraising Campaign for new sails for our 420 Fleet. At the March membership meeting, we were able to raise $1350 in pledges and donations from the generous members in attendance. NSSC Bridge agreed to match the first $800 in pledges! Because of you, we are off to a great start and are looking forward to sailing proud for North Star with new sails and bringing home the flags!

We are overwhelmed by the generosity of the great folks of North Star! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!! Remember Junior Sailing is a 501C(3) charitable organization (hint hint!).

Lolly Boston Trophy

An Award plaque dedicated to the major contributors and boats purchased out of the Lolly Boston Fund has been completed. it heading to the engravers as you read this. After engraving it will be displayed in the North Star sail Clubs new soon to be installed showcase.
